Finite Element Analysis\u00a0FEA<\/h2>\n

Three typical examples of parts which Bill has analyzed in the past:<\/p>\n

1) Auto_carrier<\/strong> – This was a (revised) design of a deck which was used in an automobile transport \"Autotrailer. The original design (not shown) was very heavy. It consisted of square tubular sections and square cross members.
\nIn the revised design, formed channels were substituted for the square sections. Cross members were also formed. The resulting structure was 25% lighter, about the same strength, and 25% stiffer than the original deck. In addition, the revised deck was far cleaner, and more appealing to the eye. The cost of production was reduced by about one third.<\/p>\n

2) Xmembr_compare<\/strong> – The top diagram shows an (original) cross-member used on a\"Truck heavy truck. This unit was experiencing a high frequency of failure (cracking) at the areas shown in red. Finding the cause of the failure was the tricky part of the exercise, however once the failure mechanism was determined, the problem was straight forward to resolve.
\nThe bottom diagram shows the revised part and the corresponding improvement. There were no further failures on this component.<\/p>\n

3) Cam_arm<\/strong> – This is a “latch” securing a water line connection for a ski slope in British Columbia. It was breaking (in the red area) under a water \"Canpressure of 2250 psi. The alloy used to make this arm was 40,000 psi yield Aluminum alloy.
\nThe most straightforward solution was to use a higher tensile alloy (60,0000 psi). The top picture shows where the arm was breaking originally. The bottom picture shows the latch of higher strength under the same load condition. When the material was changed, the problem was totally resolved.<\/p>\n

The examples above show typical issues that can be resolved through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This technology can be used for:<\/p>\n

\n d) Vibration (oscillation) minimization<\/strong>
